Conflict is a natural component of interaction. People are unlikely to agree on everything and diversity of opinions should be seen as positive, giving rise to the creation of new ideas and the development of solutions that include a number of different perspectives with regard to a given environment. When conflict is legislated against or driven underground, the consequence may be stagnation or demise depending on the circumstances.
Conflicts can be leveraged if there is a clear understanding of the nature of conflict, why it occurs, the perspectives of the various parties to a conflict, and the methods available to arrive at a resolution acceptable to all.
Delegates are shown that conflict is not something to be avoided but to be leveraged; it represents an opportunity for people to share ideas and to view the conflict as a problem both parties must attempt to solve rather than a war that one party must win at the expense of the other.
